Weight

Today we move onto learning about weight. What is weight? What are we measuring? Discuss vocabulary used – heavy/light, heavier/lighter, heaviest/lightest. What do we use to measure weight? Talk to your child about weighing fruit and vegetables when we go shopping and how these items are weighed on weighing scales - they can be measured in kilograms (kg) or grams (g). Discuss how when we are baking a cake we need to measure the flour and sugar. If you have some weighing scales in the kitchen, show your child how they are used. Look at the packaging on items of food to find out what the weight is. You can do lots at home around this topic. Explain how we use different types of scales to weigh ourselves.

What happens to the weighing scales when something is heavy?

Can you sort the items into heavy and light?
