Phonics

For our phonics this week we are going to practice ‘nonsense words’ (words that aren’t real). Watch the video below and then practice reading nonsense words on www.phonicsplay.co.uk by playing one of the games from last week (Buried Treasure, Picnic on Pluto and Dragons Den).

Phonics Assessment Episode 2 - Blending and Decoding Pseudo Words

Watch UK school teacher Mr Thorne discover some brand new words!

This week we are also going to be learning how to read words with more than three sounds in them, so far we have looked at cvc words-consonant, vowel, consonant- leg, church, sight. Now we will move on to cvcc words – consonant, vowel, consonant, consonant- tent, bend, damp.

To do this we need to try and to read ‘ten’ by sounding it out, t-e-n, practise this word a couple of times and then add the ‘t’ sound to the end to make t-e-n-t, sound it out again together and repeat with bend, damp and mend.

Once your child has understood this (it may take a couple of attempts) practice reading some of the phase 4 set 1-7 words on phonics play games above.

Don’t forget there are lots of games for you to play on education city too!
