Phase 3 Tricky Words Song Say Hello To

These are words that your children should be able to spell and use correctly in their writing.

Phase 4 Tricky Words Song Sight Words Song for said, have, like, come, some, what, when

These words are some of the ones in their homework books - Year 2 Common exception words. By the end of year 2 your child should be able to read and spell all of the words on that list.

Phonics - Mr Barker 'igh' phoneme and Miss Avis 'ea' phoneme (Monday 5th October 2020)

There is a Phonics lesson today for both mine and Miss Avis’ groups please ask your child who they do Phonics with every morning and follow the lesson on the Year 2 home learning page or my YouTube page.

 

Mr Barker's Phonics - Today we will be focusing on the 'igh' digraph. Ask your child to write the 'ea' sound in their homework books 10x then please watch the video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Qy0VtMS_FM. Explain to your child that the igh' sound usually goes in the middle of the word like ‘light’ and ‘knight’ and commonly ends with the letter ‘t’.

 

Once your child has watched the video ask them to write 5 words with the ‘igh' sound in - you can ask them to write the following words and check their spelling ‘night' ‘might' 'light' 'bright' and 'fright'. Miss Avis' Phonics-  Today we will be focusing on the 'ea' digraph. Ask your child to write the 'ea' sound in their homework books 10x then please watch the video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eiMWHiBwoms. Explain to your child that the ea' sound usually goes in the middle of the word like ‘seat’ and ‘clean’. ‘sea’  and ‘tea’ are some exceptions to this rule where it is at the end.

 

Once your child has watched the video ask them to write 5 words with the ‘ea' sound in - you can ask them to write the following words and check their spelling ‘sea' ‘meat' 'beat' 'treat' and 'speak'. Explain to your child that the ow' sound usually goes in the middle of the word like ‘ou’ and commonly ends with an ‘l’ or ‘n’ for example ‘towel’ ‘howl’ ‘clown’, ‘down’. ‘owl’ is an exception to this rule where it is at the beginning and ‘cow’ and ‘wow’ where it is at the end. Once your child has watched the video ask them to write 5 words with the ‘ow' sound in - you can ask them to write the following words and check their spelling ‘cow' owl' 'town' 'brown' 'growl'. Miss Avis' Phonics- Today we will be focusing on the 'ie' sound. Ask your child to write the 'ie' sound in their homework books 10x then please watch the video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esc6yoAU5yU. Explain to your child that the 'ie' is usually follow by an ‘s’ when we are writing plurals of words that end in y, for example spy becomes ‘spies’ and the verb form that ends in y, for example ‘cry’ and ‘try’ becomes ‘tries’ and ‘cries’

Once your child has watched the video ask them to write 5 words with the 'ie' sound in - you can ask them to write the following words and check their spelling ‘tie' pie' 'tries' 'cried'  and 'fries'. Explain to your child that the 'ou' sound usually comes in the middle of a word but may come at the beginning like in ‘out’.

Phonics - 'ai' sound (Monday 28th September 2020)

Today we will be focusing on the 'ai' sound. Ask your child to write the 'ai' sound in their homework books 10x then please watch the video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQGObQTTR-g. Explain to your child that the 'ai' sound usually goes in the middle of a word like in 'main' and 'tail', but sometimes it may come at the beginning of a word like 'aim'.
